Koleksiyonda en enteresan hikayesi olan dokümanlardan bir tanesi bu dokümandır. Burkhard Gantenbein 1920’lerden başlayarak başta Helvetia gibi şirketlerin Türkiye temsilciliğini yapan bir acentedir. Burkhard Gantenbein’in ismini Google yaptığımda ise bu isimde yaşayan bir Alman/İsviçre vatandaşı olduğunu, 12 yıl Helvetia’nın CEO’luğunu yaptığını gördüm, kendisi haziran ayı başı itibariyle de Doğu Avrupa’nın en büyük şirketlerinden olan Uniqa’nın yönetim kurulu başkanı atanmıştır. Bunun bir tesadüf olmadığını düşünerek araştırma yaptığımda ise Burkhard Gantenbein’dan aşağıdaki mesajı aldım.
Özetle 1920’lerde acentelik yapan Burkhard Gantenbein kendisinin dedesidir. Dedesi Helvetia’da staj yaptıktan sonra Türkiye’deki Helvetia acentesi emekli olduğu için bu görev kendisine teklif edilmiştir ve 20. Yüzyılın başında dedesi bu görevi kabul ederek İstanbul’a gelmiştir. Dedesi trajik şekilde 43 yaşında vefat etmiş ve İstanbul’da defnedilmiştir. Babası ve babasının üç kardeşi de İstanbul’da doğmuştur. Dedesinin kardeşi işleri devam ettirmiş olup bu belgeyi de imzalayan dedesinin kardeşi Ulrich Gantenbein’dir. Acentelik 1950’li yıllarda satılmış, sonrasında sigorta işinden çıkmıştır. Şu an hala Buga Otis Asansör Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş. olarak faaliyetlerine devam etmektedir.

In fact the agency you mention was the agency of my grandfather. My grandfather did his apprenticeship at Helvetia Insurance in St. Gallen and was then offered the opportunity to go to Istanbul and take over the Helvetia agency because the agent there at the time retired. So at the beginning of the 20th century my grandfather went to Istanbul and shortly afterwards he married his Swiss fiancée. He must have developed the agency successfully. Tragically, he died at the age of 43 in 1917, so my father and his three siblings were all born in Istanbul. My grandfather is buried in Istanbul. The agency was looked after for a long time by one of his brothers, Ulrich (who also signed the first document you sent). As far as I know, our family then sold its shares in the 1950s.
But the company still exists today. For decades, however, it has had nothing to do with insurance, but with elevators. Today I think it is still called BUGA OTIS Asansor Sanayi ve Ticaret A.S. and is the general agent for OTIS in Turkey (www.https://www.otis.com/tr/tr).
My father was also active in the insurance industry and was CEO and Chairman of Union Suisse (now Generali) in Geneva for many years and I myself was a member of the Management Board of Generali in Austria and then CEO of Helvetia Insurance in Austria for many years. Now, as you have seen, I am the Chairman of Uniqa Insurance Group.
